Emergency Medical Science Certificate

Program Goals – To prepare Paramedics who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.

The Online Paramedic Hybrid Continuing Education Certification Program provides individuals with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to provide advanced medical care as a paramedic. Graduates who successfully complete this program are eligible to sit for both the North Carolina state credentialing exam and the National Registry Credentialing exam. Employment opportunities include emergency medical agencies, fire and rescue agencies, specialty alternative care locations and government agencies.

Program Learning Outcomes
Graduates will:

  1. Demonstrate the proper donning and doffing of protective gear appropriate for the EMT and situation.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to interact with other responders appropriately including giving and taking Advice on patient care. Interact as a member of a team.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to complete a patient care report including a summation of treatment provided to the receiving facility or transporting ambulance.
  4. Examine and analyze the nature and seriousness of the patient’s condition or extent of injuries to assess the need for emergency medical care, perform appropriate medical care based on assessment findings of the patient’s condition, lift, move, position and otherwise handle the patient to minimize discomfort and prevent further injury.
  5. Demonstrate the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic within an EMS system, perform the basic concepts of development, pathophysiology and pharmacology to assessment and management of emergency patients, be able to properly administer medications, and apply effective communication with patients, peers, and healthcare professionals.
  6. Perform airway management including oxygenation and ventilation of a patient.
  7. Demonstrate a proper history and perform a comprehensive physical examination on any patient and communicate findings to others.
  8. Demonstrate integration of pathophysiological principles and analyze assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement the treatment plan for the medical patient with common complaints.
  9. Demonstrate integration of pathophysiological principles and analyze assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement the treatment plan for the trauma patient.
  10. Demonstrate integration of pathophysiological principles and analyze assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement the treatment plan for neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric patients, diverse patients, and chronically ill patients.
  11. Perform safety management principles at the scene of an emergency.
  12. Apply general knowledge and understanding of managing an emergency medical services system.

Paramedic Graduate Outcomes

CAAHEP Accredited Paramedic Programs and CoAEMSP Letter of Review (LoR) Programs track and report outcome measures annually to the Committee on Accreditation for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). The most current CoAEMSP Annual Report was for the calendar year 2024.

  • The most recent pass rate for the National Registry of EMT Paramedic/State Cognitive exam was 100%.
  • The most recent positive placement rate for graduates was 100%. Positive placement is defined by the CoAEMSP as ‘Employed full or part-time in a related field and/or continuing his/her education and/or serving in the military’. Positive placement is measured at completion of the program.
  • The most recent retention rate for 2024 graduates was 84.6%.

The CoAEMSP Annual Report for the calendar year 2023 showed a success rate for the National Registry of EMT Paramedic/State Cognitive exam of 100%. Positive placement rate for graduates in 2023 was 100%. Positive placement is defined by the CoAEMSP as ‘Employed full or part-time in a related field and/or continuing his/her education and/or serving in the military’. Positive placement is measured at completion of the program. Retention rate for 2023 was 58.3%.

NC EMT credential OR National Registry EMT credential
College Level Anatomy and Physiology, BIO 168/169 OR BIO163
College level English or Math completed OR successful completion of CASAS testing for advanced placement.
